The least expensive method is to learn how to cut vinyl letters. The initial cost of a Cricut or Silhouette machine will quickly be recouped with the money that you save on lettering for your own home and for others.

Another slightly more expensive method would be to cut them out of wood using a saw. Woodworking is a hobby that will pay BIG dividends over the course of a lifetime. Once you have a few monograms under your belt you can move onto furniture!
Sure, you could easily make them yourself if you have some paint, brushes and artistic ability, but why bother when they are so cheap? Hanging wooden letters are a popular wall decoration and you can have them custom made in any theme, color or style that you could ever want.
Since this would be such an easy baby craft to master, you can make your own! If you don't feel that you can free hand the alphabet letters that you will need to spell your baby's name or monogram, you might consider using alphabet stencils.
There are several choices of materials that can be used to make your wall letters. As I mentioned above, you could get square ceramic tiles if you can find them in a workable shade for your nursery walls. Sometimes you can get them really cheap by contacting a contractor that lays tile. Many times they have tiles left over from a kitchen or bathroom job and will let you have them at a deep discount. If you smile and talk really sweet they might even GIVE them to you for nothing! Paint or stencil your baby's name with some free alphabet stencils, stick on some decorative wallies and there you have it!
You can find precut wooden shapes at craft or discount stores with the holes already drilled and ready to use for hanging large wooden nursery wall letters. I have seen the wooden shapes cut in stars, hearts and even large flowers. As you can see in the pictures above, pretty ribbons make lovely hangers for your wall letters.
Another option for your nursery decorating project would be to purchase some pre-primed canvas and cut it into whatever size or shape, however large or small that you want your wall letters or wall hanging to be. Canvas is very popular for making large wallhangings or banners for children's rooms. Canvas is very forgiving, if you make a mistake paint over it or at less than three dollars a yard, throw it away and start fresh! While canvas is a common choice, pretty much any heavy weight fabric will do.
If you have a set of metal snips and some hole punchers, you may want to paint your wall letters on scraps of tin . The advantage here would be that pieces of tin are lightweight and easy to cut into many different shapes and designs. Because of the danger of exposed, sharp edges I prefer to stick with wooden letters for nursery decorations.
Here's a fabulous idea if you don't mind making your artwork out of less than durable materials. Cut your squares out of cardboard and cover the cardboard with fabric, such as lovely gingham print or other prints suitable for nurseries. Paint your alphabet or baby's name using fabric paint or even use vinyl decals for your details. Some cute little ladybug nursery wallies or other cut outs would look really good on a check or polka dot background!
No matter what type of letters, whether you choose decals or wooden letters, that you hang on the walls you can get examples on Unique Baby Gear Ideas to go by and be sure that your child will enjoy seeing the decorations that spell his or her name for many, many years.
