The crib with its pink and orange surf theme baby bedding set that we chose our baby girl's surfer nursery
We picked up most of our surfer girl nursery ideas from the times Mom and Dad spent at the beach. The two of us enjoyed many a long sunny afternoon lounging on the sand by the ocean. When we found out our first child was on the way, we wanted to make a fun and cheerful room where we could spend time with our baby girl.
As we live near the beach and grew up surfing, Dad knew our first child would be spending her days in the sand and surf early on.
Once we found out that we were expecting a girl, Mom took over and added her feminine touch to the surf decor.

We worked to create a place for our daughter that makes her comfortable and familiar with the outdoors, while evoking positive memories of past, present, and future fun times spent together as a family surfing and playing at the beach.
What wall paint color did you find worked best in the surf themed nursery? We used a pink latex for the walls that blended into a wavy tan border painted towards the floor of the room.
We primed the walls but didn't choose our wall paint color until three ultrasound technicians verified that we were having a girl and the pictures left no question about it. Then, Mom and Dad painted the walls, and decorations before mom was too big to easily move around.
Did you paint the palm tree mural or hire a professional? All of the painted decorations what you see on the nursery walls including the lovely palm trees mural were painted by Mom using quick drying, acrylic paints from the craft store. Mom showed off some of her artistic talent and painted the palm trees freehand. Being from California, and inspired by one of Mom's pregnancy cravings the palm trees had a subtle In-N-Out Burger theme about them.
Did you know when you were making your checklist of surfer girl nursery ideas that you would be shopping for nursery furniture with a light finish? Initially, we learned that Goodwill thrift stores carried new, unopened baby products, like baby cribs, strollers, etc. so we bought a crib from a local Goodwill. However, when we were searching for a baby dresser, we found a fantastic deal on Craigslist for a Pali 4000 series nursery set that came with a crib. We went to see the used nursery furniture in person. We liked it so well that we decided to buy the set and then gave the crib we had bought at the Goodwill store to a friend. The Pali nursery set belonged to a very nice family whose baby had simply outgrown the furniture that they had maintained in flawless condition.
Surfer Nursery BeddingWe chose a set of pink and orange surfer girl baby bedding from JoJo that went with our baby girl's nursery theme and added more pink like Mom wanted.
Where did you find so many cute surf theme nursery decorations? The surf themed nuresry decorations in this room came from various sources. Some were received as gifts and many are re-purposed items we already had in the house.
Can you give us some tips on storage solutions in a surfing theme room?Because we have baby girl clothes in all sizes that came as gifts, hand me downs or that we bought ourselves we organized the clothing by age and sizes. We stored the larger sizes in separate containers in the closet. This was to be sure we cycled through as many of her clothes as possible before she outgrew them.
How long did it take for you to check off all the little surfer girl nursery ideas on your "to-do" list? In all, decorating this nursery took us about 2 weeks althought we spread the process out over 6 months. We started with gathering our baby girl's nursery ideas first and then slowly cleared out Dad's office.
Once we found out we were having a daughter, we began collecting some small items that we could use elsewhere, give away or use for either a boy or a girl just in case her predicted gender was wrong.
What was the best part of taking the DIY approach to decorating your baby girl's room?We had a lot of fun putting everything together and enjoyed bouncing ideas off each other. When we would go shopping, we enjoyed studying items that caught our eye and figuring out if we could incorporate it into the nursery's design. There were several times that we used an item successfully even though one person or the other had the opinion that it would not look right. We managed to make our decisions and pull everything together in the weeks before the due date and are very happy with how it turned out.
Did you hire a professional to do any part of the decorating or did you take your surfer girl nursery ideas and run with them yourselves?Mom and Dad did the entire nursery themselves while Gidget, their Golden Retriever watched everything that was going on. Of course friends chipped in, helping Dad carry the furniture in or helping Mom lift things while Dad was at work, and several baby shower gifts made this possible but as for ghe actual creation of the nursery; this was a project for the Mom, Dad, and dog.
I can tell that you chose each and every item in the room carefully and with so much love but I have to ask, is there a particular feature or area that is your favorite? We love that our baby girl's room is bright and fun but by drawing the shades this becomes a comfortable, but still happy place. It is a room we enjoy being in, and although it is cheerful, whimsical, and fun in some ways, it can easily grow with our daughter simply by changing a few accessories.
