Sebastian's Owl Nursery Theme
by Carrie
(Edmonton, Alberta, Canada)
Our baby boy's owl themed nursery has an owl tree wall mural made with decals in the corner.
Our crib was made complete with custom made owl baby nursery bedding made from Robert Kaufman owl fabric and green minky material
The wall shelves were purchased from Winners
A collection of baby blocks that I had bought online and Robert Kaufman owl pattern fabric were the inspiration for the design of Sebastian's owl nursery. The building blocks were the first purchase that I made for the project.
I actually bought the blocks before I found the fabric and then used the colors of the animals on the blocks to find the best material to sew the crib set, wall art, and decorative accessories that you see in the photographs.
I bought the owl themed nursery window treatments after I finished sewing the baby's bedding.
I had considered making my own curtains until I found a set of curtains that matched the nursery window valance and crib skirt perfectly at our local Walmart!

Our Baby Boy's Custom Owl Baby Bedding SetThe crib set was made with a combination of soft, green minky fabric and Robert Kaufman owl fabric .
Nursery Wall DecorThe
owl tree wall decal came from a store that I found online. We decided to apply the mural in the corner rather than on a single, flat wall for added interest.
After painting the walls, I realized that the framed owl prints and the baby's growth chart were a lovely contrast to the Benjamin Moore cream color paint that we used for the wooden trim and the blue paint color that we used for the walls as was the wall mural.
DIY Homemade Owl Nursery DecorSo many decorations for Sebastian's
owl nursery theme were handmade, such as the
owl crib mobile and baby blankets.
The growth chart is a pine board that I painted and then decorated with printed owl and animal pictures using a decoupage technique.
I designed the baby mobile to match the theme of our baby boy's nursery using owl, bird and tree decorations. Sebby loves to lie in his crib and look at the mobile that Mommy made for him!
Decorative ItemsMany of the decorations for Sebastian's owl nursery theme were purchased from Etsy including the inspirational set of building blocks, some owl art and the vintage tricycle.
Nursery FurnitureSebastian's crib came as a three piece set. The Gluckstein convertible crib will transition into a toddler bed and eventually we will convert it into a double bed.
I found a rocking chair on Kijiji that is much more attractive than traditional rocking chairs I saw in stores. Then I had it reupholstered using soft, garment grade flannel fabric that is ideal for snuggling and reading. I also had the ottoman reupholstered using fabric with a polka dots pattern.
The rest of the nursery's furnishings including the floating wall shelves, reading table and bookcase were all purchased from Winners.
Nursery Storage IdeasI use cream color baskets that are stored under the baby's changing table to organize many of Sebastian's necessities that we use often like diapers, baby lotion, sleepers, etc. I the baskets at the dollar store and dressed them up with brown ribbon. The block shelves in the closet were purchased from Home Depot serve as organizers for the rest of his items that we don't need quite as often.
Nursery Lamps and LightingMost of the nursery's light fixtures came from Home depot and E-children. I found a lamp by Carters at E-Children that matched the animals and color scheme perfectly!
We started decorating the baby's room when I was six months pregnant and we slowly worked at it for about a month. I LOVED every moment that we spent decorating and making Sebastian's nursery perfect for our precious angel. My favorite part of the process was being so excited and preparing for the arrival of our baby boy with my amazing husband.
Now that all the work is done, we love how the whimsical atmosphere of the room suits his playful personality!! We had so much fun designing the entire nursery on our own and can't wait to do the next one!
I hope that visitors to
