I am changing to cloth diapers because my baby is irritated by disposable diapers. I quickly became aware of this fact when he was a newborn. Even though diapering with cloth was on my mind from early on in my pregnancy. From the moment I became pregnant, organic cloth was consideration but since I had boxes of disposables on hand that I had received as gifts; I didn't want them to go to waste.
No sooner than I had put the first one on him; he began to get red and develop an itchy rash that I initially attributed to dry skin or perhaps the cream I was putting on him with each change. I read what the Mayo Clinic had to say about diaper rash prevention and following their instructions but when there was no improvement and it became obvious that the condition extended beyond the area that I had applied the cream, I came to the conclusion that something (chemicals?) in the diapers that I was using was irritating him. Thinking it might be the brand, I opened another box and tried again but the rash got worse rather than going away.
I didn't have any cloth diapers but I had a friend who used them so I got in touch so that I could start right away to make my baby boy's bottom less irritated. After a bath and a few changes using cloth; I have never looked back! the only thing that I did not like was using old-fashioned pins on him so I am hoping to win some free baby diapers in contests like the ones on www.Unique-Baby-Gear-Ideas.com and gift certificates that I can use to buy some with inserts and snaps.
I still don't know the reason my baby is irritated by disposable diapers. All I know is that he is and that organic cloth diapers are all I want to use from here on out. Are they a little more work? Of course, their care and maintenance takes more time than simply tossing the others in the trash but no amount of convenience is worth watching an infant suffer with painful, inflamed skin.
