How to Make Halloween Costumes Out of Baby Clothes

Our little curly girls' costume!

I needed ideas and a tutorial for how to make baby Halloween costumes out of baby clothes since I have some onesies and tiny tank tops already on hand that are too good to waste. Even if I didn't have the required pieces of clothing, I would appreciate the instructions because I see these little outfits for sale for less than a dollar at yard sales and secondhand stores all the time.

This is a great idea because the some of the sewing projects create items that can be worn after baby's first Halloween and Trick or Treating are long over.

Tutorial for How to Make a Girl's Ballerina Costume Using a Onesie

The first tutorial is for a baby girl's ballerina costume that transforms a plain, white onesie and a tiny tutu into an adorable pink and white outfit. There are also instructions for a sweet, matching headband. Unless you have an infant ballet tutu on hand, this costume requires some sewing skills.

Tutorial for How to Make a Girl's Cupcake Costume Like the Pottery Barn Cupcake Costume

The next tutorial, and probably the best example, is a completely no-sew pattern!

This cupcake baby Halloween costume is a knock off of a similar costume sold at Pottery Barn Kids and a very good one! You will not need a pattern for it, just some of your baby's clothes for measurements, some materials and a hot glue gun! VOILA! A few snips of the scissors, a few dabs of hot glue and you have a baby cupcake costume!

Tutorial for How to Make a Candy Corn Halloween Costume Using a Onesie

And I save the BEST for last, the Candy Corn Costume! This is another one that requires some sewing but it's an easy costume for beginners. All you have to do is sew an orange and yellow skirt onto a baby's onesie which is pretty straight forward but if you need some help you can refer to the 10 minute onesie dress instructions to get yourself back on track. The beauty of this costume is that your baby girl can wear it as a Halloween outfit and then just as a cute dress afterwards.

I love the ideas for an infant doctor costume; they are so cute but I wondered if you might direct me toward a pattern or tutorial for infant scrubs? Thanks so much!

Do any of the tutorials include free patterns including instructions for how or where to cut the fabric of the baby clothes to get a good fit? I am a beginner and am not confident enough to trust my own instincts on a sewing project like this yet.
