child saftey
by: vcllrg

I don't think its cruel in any way....there are many reason that parents use a safety harness. I was always very over protective with my oldest but by the time I had my third child I had learned to be a little more at ease with certain things.

My third child has a form of autism and he loves being outdoors but there is always a risk because he doesn't really have a since of fear and doesn't think before trying to run across the street or parking lot.

I don't always use a safety harness with my child unless we are in a public place where he can easily get away from me and might be hurt. He loves to explore but I do have to keep him safe as well.

So, for those parents who think it's cruel to use baby leashes or harnesses; you can't always know what the reasoning is behind the parents' use of a safety harness with their child.

And they can't always stop to explain their reasoning if they get criticized. Next time think before you criticize a parents reason for using this type of baby gear to keep their child safe.

Baby leashes/harnesses

Those people who criticize mothers who use harnesses obviously have no children and have NO idea how quickly toddlers can stray from their mothers, especially when they see something that they are interested in and just learning about like a moving car, for example. The person who posted the first comment is completely ignorant to this. Why be so rude? Get a life!!

Cute harnesses? Get real! You would rather tie your kids up than keep up with them?

Isn't this just lazy parenting?

Controlling your child
by: Anonymous

Child leashes are not just about controlling your child. I bought one to use when I took my daughter (who is very well mannered, thank you very much) on her first trip to the zoo.

It's a safety measure that I felt was well worth taking. It's so easy to become separated from your children in crowded places. If you think that you would never get distracted and that handholding is always enough I have a little story to tell you.

A mama I know went to the mall with a baby in a stroller and a toddler by the hand. She had her purse in the basket underneath the stroller and for one reason or another it fell out spilling everything in her bag onto the floor. For a split second she let go of her older child's hand to put her stuff back in her purse. When she looked up, her toddler was nowhere in sight. Luckily, the child was only a short distance away but who is to say that the worst could not have happened? After all, kids get kidnapped in broad daylight right from under their parents' noses all the time.

Besides, baby leashes are not uncomfortable and my oldest loves her Elmo leash! Like the other poster, I'd much rather have my child in a restraint and be criticized than take a chance on something bad happening.

Cute Baby Leashes and Harnesses
by: Anonymous

I think that part of the "stigma" came from the almost institutional design of some of the early baby leashes and harnesses. Like the opinionated mommy in your group, I would have never used such a restraint when I had my first baby.

Then more babies came along to change my mind.
My oldest child was a rambunctious toddler when the twins arrived and I realized that unless something changed that I would have to pay a baby sitter just to do our weekly shopping!

When I saw another mom at the mall with her child wearing a cute backpack restraint that looked more like a toy than a leash, I started shopping for cute baby leashes and harnesses. I love that I can now keep tabs on my oldest child without feeling like I'm taking the dog for a walk.

Oh and before some of you moms (who probably only have one child or a nanny on payroll) go criticizing me, you should know that I do have a triple stroller and I do carry my child sometimes but there is no way to carry three children or even one child all the time.

And I am willing to do whatever it takes much less withstand criticism to be sure that no one nabs my children or they don't get hit by a car. It only takes a split second disaster to strike and that is something I would prefer to avoid.

I'm glad that I found some really cute baby leashes right there in my local Walmart but I would use one even if it looked like a straitjacket so long as it kept my babies safe.
